Seasonal celebration with students at Spicebush Montessori School

Our Story at Spicebush

We're a small community of families and teachers who believe deeply in children's natural wisdom and capacity for joy. Come learn about what we've discovered together.

How We Began

In 2021, our founding teachers came together with a dream: to create a place where every child could be celebrated for exactly who they are. After decades of working with children, we'd seen how beautifully they learn when they feel truly accepted and free to explore. We named our school after the native Spicebush plant—a humble shrub that provides food and shelter for many different creatures, just as we hope to nurture all the different ways children grow and bloom. Our name and mission are also grounded in the Quaker values of SPICES: Social Justice, Peace, Inclusion, Community, Environment, and Simplicity.

What We Believe

We see each child as a whole person—curious, capable, and deserving of deep respect. In our community, children grow in independence not through pressure, but through the gentle confidence that comes from being truly known and supported. We believe beautiful education should be possible for every family, regardless of income, and that differences in how children learn and move through the world make our community richer and more alive.

Kirsti Forrest, Teacher Leader at Spicebush Montessori School

Kirsti Forrest

Teacher Leader
Since 2022
Kirsti serves as Teacher Leader at Spicebush Montessori, where they guide a classroom grounded in equity, curiosity, and thoughtful observation. They approach their work with a steady belief that children deserve to be affirmed both as they are and as they long to be. Within a carefully prepared Montessori environment, Kirsti supports children in building independence, concentration, and authentic confidence. Their leadership balances structure with flexibility, allowing space for movement, deep focus, collaboration, and rest. They pay close attention to how each child experiences the classroom, recognizing that growth looks different for every learner. Kirsti is certified (Birth–3) through the American Montessori Society and brings over ten years of experience working with children from birth through second grade. They hold a degree in Early Care and Education from Delaware Technical Community College and are currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Human and Social Services at Springfield College. Their academic work strengthens their commitment to equity, social-emotional development, and community-centered care. As an autistic educator with ADHD, Kirsti brings lived insight to their inclusive practice. They are especially attuned to sensory needs, executive functioning differences, and the diverse ways children communicate and regulate. The classroom reflects this understanding — sometimes lively or calm, responsive, and intentionally designed so that children feel safe to be fully themselves without pressure to mask or conform. Beyond the classroom, Kirsti also leads Spicebush Montessori’s social media presence, sharing authentic glimpses of Montessori work in action. Through thoughtful storytelling, they help families see the depth, joy, and intentionality behind the daily rhythms of the school. Kirsti believes that when children feel understood and affirmed, they develop not only skills, but a grounded sense of self that carries forward into every stage of life.
Leah Walker, Teacher Leader at Spicebush Montessori School

Leah Walker

Teacher Leader
Since 2022
Leah serves as a Teacher Leader at Spicebush Montessori with a deep commitment to thoughtful preparation, affirming guidance, and honoring the natural rhythm of childhood. She believes that children thrive when given meaningful responsibility within a carefully prepared environment that is truly theirs. Leah holds her AMS certification for ages 3–6 from Chaminade University of Honolulu, where she lived and studied for several years. Her time in Hawaiʻi shaped both her Montessori practice and her appreciation for place-based learning, community connection, and respect for the environment. She brings over a decade of lead teaching experience working with young children, guiding them through foundational years of independence, social development, and joyful academic discovery. As an educator with ADHD, Leah brings a lived understanding to the diverse ways children focus, process, and engage. She values movement, hands-on exploration, and structured freedom within the classroom. Her leadership reflects both consistency and flexibility — providing clear expectations while honoring each child’s unique developmental path. In addition to her role in the classroom, Leah serves as caretaker of the Concord Friends Meeting property, the historic and peaceful space that Spicebush Montessori calls home. Through this stewardship, she helps maintain the land and buildings that support the daily life of the school, strengthening the relationship between Montessori education and the broader community. Her care for the environment mirrors the respect and attentiveness she brings to her classroom. Leah believes that when children are trusted with real work, supported with patience, and connected to a strong community, they develop confidence that extends far beyond their early years.
Kira Messinger, Teaching Partner at Spicebush Montessori School

Kira Messinger

Teaching Partner
Since 2023
Kira serves as a Teaching Partner at Spicebush Montessori, where they bring collaboration, steadiness, and a strong foundation in inclusive education to the classroom community. They are committed to supporting children in ways that honor individual strengths and encourage growing independence. Kira graduated from Millersville University with a dual degree in Education and Special Education. Their academic background equips them with a deep understanding of differentiated instruction, learning differences, and strengths-based support. With nearly a decade of experience working with children from kindergarten through sixth grade, Kira brings both range and practical classroom wisdom to their role. In addition to their public school experience, Kira has worked in multiple Montessori settings, gaining hands-on experience within prepared environments and mixed-age classrooms. They understand the importance of order, consistency, and thoughtful observation in supporting child-led learning and sustained concentration. As an autistic educator with ADHD, Kira brings lived insight into sensory processing, executive functioning, and the varied ways children communicate and engage. Their presence in the classroom reinforces Spicebush’s commitment to inclusive practice and ensures that neurodivergent children see themselves reflected in leadership. At Spicebush, Kira plays an essential role in maintaining the prepared environment — carefully tending materials, supporting work cycles, and collaborating closely with the Teacher Leader to ensure continuity throughout the day. They also help guide our extended care program, offering thoughtful supervision and relational consistency beyond core classroom hours. Kira values persistence, clarity, and community. Through their work, they help cultivate a classroom culture where children feel safe to explore, connect, and grow in confidence.
